Introduction
Actinomycosis is a rare type of bacterial infection caused by actinomyces bacteria. The four main types are cervicofacial, thoracic, abdominal and pelvic.
Symptoms of actinomycosis
The symptoms of actinomycosis can vary depending on the type. Symptoms of oral cervicofacial actinomycosis include swollen lumps on the face or neck.
Causes of actinomycosis
Actinomycosis is caused by a strain of bacteria called actinomycetales. Actinomycetales are found in many of the body’s cavities, such as inside the mouth.
Diagnosing actinomycosis
In its initial stages, actinomycosis can be difficult to diagnose. This is because it shares the symptoms of more common conditions such as appendicitis.
Treating actinomycosis
Antibiotics are the first-line treatment for actinomycosis. A long-term course of antibiotics is required to completely clean out the infection.
