Causes of hiccups
Hiccups are caused when the diaphragm suddenly and involuntarily contracts, causing you to breathe in air quickly.
Diagnosing hiccups
Hiccups that last for less than 48 hours and stop on their own do not require a diagnosis from your GP. Visit your GP if your hiccups last longer than 48 hours.
Treating hiccups
Most cases of hiccups do not need medical treatment and they will usually stop after a short period of time. Underlying medical problems can be treated.
